8. Bring your own calling card.

Calling cards are readily available everywhere in hotels and stores in Costa Rica. But to ensure you don't purchase more calling time than you need, bring your own calling card.

Before you leave home contact your phone company to ensure your card is activated for international calling. You may also wish to ask them what the easiest way is to reach home.
