3. Know what to expect when you get in a taxi.

    Costa Rica has an abundance of taxis which are usually red or orange in color. All taxies are governed by law and must have a meter. Inside inner cities, the meter must be active. If it isn't, be sure to tell the drive to turn it on.

    Outside the inner city, however, a flat rate applies. Be sure to ask the driver what the rate is before you embark. You may also ask in your hotel what a reasonable rate to your desired destination should be.

    Remember to pay the driver only in Costa Rican money, as discussed in tip #4. Also, remember to carry a variety of smaller bills, in case your driver has no change.
