1. To shop for the best airfare, know your airport options and be flexible about dates. When you are shopping for an airfare, shop around to different travel agents. Agents often have different airline affiliations, so you may not always get the best price on the first try. Also, it is good to remember (and remind your travel agent) that there are two major airports in Costa Rica. The largest airport is in San Jose, the capital city. It is a newly built efficient modern airport, just 16 km (10 miles) from the city and minutes from major hotels. Its call letters are SJO. This airport is served by most major airlines and is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The airport is named "Santa Maria" (Juan Santamaria International Airport) after Chris Columbus' ship, who discovered Costa Rica for the Spaniards in 1492. The Other Airport, Costa Rica's Best Kept Secret Many people don't know about Costa Rica's second major airport situated in a town called Liberia, in the province of Guanacaste, near the famous Flamingo Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Its call letters are LIR. You may get a much better deal flying in here, because it is served by many chartered airlines. It is also closest to the most beautiful beaches. Keep in mind, though, if you planned on going to San Jose, it is a 4 hour drive or a short commuter flight. Remember, where ever your arrive, don't rent a car at the airport.
